Commentary
TENDO: is located at the top of the skull at the center of the coronal suture, and were the sagittal suture meet this area on the top of the skull is commonly none as the soft spot of the skull. In eastern medicine it is said that the brain is the uppermost organ among the six odd and constant organs and it is the material base of all mental activities. It is also said that the brain is also called “ the dwelling place of. The original spirit, and this identity’s the approximate area none as GV 22 for us. The spirit of a man is how he may feel about himself deep down, he may feel fearless and masculine and peaceful deep in his spirit, or he may feel just the opposite, he may feel weak and afraid of his surroundings. This is why a light strike (causing light vibration ) to Tendo may bring about to its receiver a sudden loss of awareness in someone not so mentally heath.
Eastern. Medicine such as acupuncture, may in some cases needle GV 22 (Lihue Sung Hui) to lift the spirits of a patent to create a balance in one’s original spirit and that would balance any loss in ones awareness of spirit.
Directly underneath GV 22, the Coronal suture were it meets the sagittal suture, is the part of the brain that operates both the arms and the legs a heavier strike causing a (slightly heavier vibration) would cause a sudden weakening of the limbs or a jumping upward in the arms and a dropping down or falling of the body dew to a rising or kicking motion from one or even both of the legs along with the above mentioned sudden loss of awareness of self.
In the case of a heavier strike causing a (heavy vibration) which would brings about a fracture to the coronal suture as well as the sagittal suture, First, the nerves veins and arteries maybe damaged causing repercussions such as ill sensation in the face, and ears. The fracture of the coronal and the sagittal suture would cause pressure directly upon the brain itself and may in fact drive bone fragments, straight into the brain. This would damage the part of the brain that controls the movement of arms and legs. A possible side effect injury with a extremely heavy strike to Tendo would be trauma to the neck and its vertebra. The heavy strike to Tendo (GV 22) has now become a combination of damage, which has now become lethal.
The brain also communicates with the kidney by way of GV 22 and it’s meridian, by the storing of essence. ‘Essence’ is the base of the human body and of many of the functional activities. The kidneys main functions are: to store essence and dominate human reproduction and the reception of Qi, producing marrow to fill the brain and bones and to manufacture blood. The kidney in an imbalanced state may also have an effect on the aging process as well.
There are several weapons’ that could be used to strike Tendo (GV 22). The most well none weapon is the hammer fist. The application of the hammer fist to Tendo has been displayed in many Okinawan Kata and Shaolin and other various systems. The hammer fist is applied more often than other weapons for the simple reason that, the hammer fist takes less training than other weapons. Although the hammer fist is used in almost every style in the martial systems, it is almost never applied as a first strike. The reason for this is because if you strike an opponent who is your height or taller, standing upright, the hammer fist will not hit correctly. The wrist will hit the hairlineparts of the skull first, making the hammer fist strike ineffective, unless your opponent is much shorter than you. From the front view, a first strike must be made with for example a toe kick or hammer fist strike to the (femoral artery an vein were it’s closest to the superficial epigastria artery and vein) found at the front view of the hip, which will cause the opponent to bend slightly and also this would drain energy from the upper body as well as the top of the head. Which will make the second strike more effective.
There is a right and a wrong way to make a fist, the proper way would be to roll the fist up from the little finger first, then continuing on with the next finger and so on till all the fingers are roll up tight, then pressing the thumb down over the fingers. This way the fist will be square as well as hard. The striking surface primarily is the Carpal bone located just above the wrist, assisted by the metacarpal bone and lastly the Phalanges compressed against the other fingers pressed together greatly, to make a surface as solid as a large mallet, which is exactly the weapon you are intending to make with your hand or hands. The proper way to bring about maximum velocity is to, make a hammer fist, and with a straight-arm that should be placed down at your side at about 5:00 at the start. Then you will swing at great speed (about 15 pounds at, 17 to 25 miles per hour) about 90 degrees to the front or 10;00 and make contact with the intended target.
Another weapon used in the White Crane system “among” other, is call the birds beak. The strike has been rarely mastered for the reason that this strike will take many hours of training before you can successfully apply it to any hard bony points. There are many forms of the birds beak but the one applied for this strike is when you place the four fingers stacked one on top of the other, this will place the two middle fingers at the top and the out side fingers underneath them and finally pressing the thumb against the last two fingers. This should give a smaller striking base than the hammer fist, which will give you a more penetrating type of strike than you would have with the hammer fist. There are several ways to train but my personal favorite way to train the bird’s beak hand stroke is to place a thick telephone book on a large granite tile and both on a strong tabletop. Raise your arm to about the height of the shoulder and drop your weapon (birds beak) down on to the telephone book 50 times, first with the right hand and then with the left. The total of strikes to the telephone book number 100 strikes per day. After the daily training rip four pages of the telephone book. In time, you will come to the end of the book and slowly you will be striking the tabletop. At this point your bird’s beak will be ready to perform soft strikes. Continue to practice on the granite.
Remember that the whole idea is to perform 50 strikes with each hand once a day without pain or numbness involved. Warning: Do not under any conditions rush this training by striking the telephone book or the granite hard enough to cause numbness or pain. This will cause permanent damage to the nerves of the fingertips as well as the joint themselves. Please remember that your hand must last a lifetime
There are other weapons that may in some cases be used under special circumstances such as the bent elbow down wards strike, the drop heel kick, which would be used when the opponent drops to their knees from a previous strike.
The idea involved in the using of any given weapon concerning this strike to (Tendo) is not that the bodily weapon is blunt, sharp or cutting, but that if it is blunt (as in a hammer fist) that the instrument develops speed producing force, and deep vibration. An example would like when a mallet strikes a big bass drum. If the weapon is sharp or semi sharp (as in a bird’s beak) that the intention is to penetrate into the given area. An example being a claw hammer striking a coca nut. When using any tool or any weapon, knowledge and intention is what brings a successful accomplishment of the none task involved. Without knowing what a tool is capable of doing (and not doing) is not enough. Intention or a determination to use the tool in the way that the tool must be used is what makes the work successful and uncomplicated, even easy.
